The Idea
The London Philharmonic Orchestra wanted a podcast that would welcome new audiences into the world of classical music.
Working with award-winning saxophonist, composer and broadcaster YolanDa Brown as host, Tandem helped develop a fresh format built around the questions people most often ask about classical music.
From “Is Mozart the GOAT?” to “What’s the etiquette around clapping at concerts?”, each episode explores a different musical question through lively conversation, insights from performers and plenty of humour.
Tandem’s Approach
Tandem worked closely with the LPO team to shape the editorial format and structure of the series. Episode themes were designed around the most intriguing and accessible questions in classical music, with research packs prepared for the presenter and contributors ahead of each recording.
Episodes are recorded flexibly on location before being carefully edited, mixed and mastered to ensure a fluent and engaging listening experience.
A light-hearted end-of-episode quiz adds another layer of interaction and reinforces the welcoming tone of the series.
Why It Works
By framing each episode around a question, the podcast invites listeners into the conversation rather than assuming prior knowledge.
The format combines expert insight with warmth and curiosity, making classical music feel approachable without losing its depth.
Impact
The podcast has already run for multiple series and continues to reach audiences across major podcast platforms.
The series was also shortlisted for the British Podcast Awards, recognising the strength of its format and presentation.
“Excellent insights into the classical music industry- really enjoyable.”
