The Idea

Leadership conversations often happen behind closed doors – in mentoring sessions, boardrooms or quiet moments of reflection. Walking Out Loud set out to bring some of those conversations into the open.

Recorded outdoors while walking, the podcast features social entrepreneur Liam Black and leadership advisor David McQueen exploring the realities of leadership – from mentoring relationships and boardroom dynamics to power, culture and knowing when it’s time to move on.

No jargon. No hype. Just honest conversation and the questions leaders rarely have time to ask.

Tandem’s Approach

Tandem worked with Liam and David to develop the concept and shape the format of the series. The aim was to create something reflective and unscripted – a podcast that felt more like a walk-and-talk conversation than a studio interview.

We designed a simple recording setup that allowed the hosts to capture conversations themselves while walking outdoors, using equipment and recording processes put in place by the Tandem team. We then edited and mixed the recordings, shaping the raw material into clear, engaging episodes and creating the visual identity for the series.

The result is a podcast that feels natural and conversational while maintaining the clarity and polish of professional audio.

Why It Works

The walking format changes the tone of the conversation. Without the formality of a studio or boardroom, discussions unfold more openly- allowing space for candour, disagreement and reflection.

Across the series Liam and David explore themes including mentoring, boardroom relationships, culture change, DEI, the pressures of leadership and the question many leaders quietly ask themselves: is it still worth it?

The result is thoughtful, human conversation about leadership as it is actually experienced.

Impact

Walking Out Loud has resonated strongly with listeners interested in leadership, mentoring and organisational culture, particularly for its honesty and lack of corporate jargon.

“An insightful and therapeutic listen – far easier to relate to than the usual glitzy management-speak.”
– Lawrence Tallon, CEO, MHRA

The series demonstrates how carefully shaped audio conversations can open up complex leadership ideas and create space for meaningful reflection.
